Teaching from the past.......

I found a link to the work of a previous student of mine back in 2003, his name is Joseph Lee . The site has a selection of work that he put together for the RIBA silver medal in 2003. He received a mention from the judging panel. He had a great project that year! He received Distinction in his final year with me when I taught Diploma Unit 6 which is now called Diploma Unit 9.

Trip to Bilbao!

Just got back at the weekend from a unit trip with Diploma Unit 9. We did the Mini Cruise from Portsmouth to Bilbao. Sorry no photos of the cruise ship! We spent a few days in Bilbao and did a trip to St. Sebastian for a day I recommend going there, very good tapas! Also saw the Richard Serra sculptures that the Guggenheim has just commissioned from him. That alone is worth going to see. Anyway here are some pics.

Tutorials Monday 24th!

Gave tutorials today with my diploma students.... these 2 models were highlights in a day that was pretty much unexciting, and one of the models only appeared after Robert and I played with it! Look people you can not go through this year at this pace of production. You will have a very hard time in passing if you keep on going at things in such a slow, imprecise, and overall lazy way of working! I hope things get a bit more professional soon!!!!!!! Also out of 19 of you only 1 person took my advice and started to get his portfolio formatting underway. Look, go to MUJI and get the portfolios going, this is advice you should take!!!!!!

Diploma Unit 9 Pin-Up!

Today we had a pin –up with Diploma Unit 9. Some interesting ideas and viewpoints on the site and what might be proposed. But there was almost a complete avoidance of engaging with the very specific brief given out. Come on people stop avoiding the brief!!!!! Considering it has been 10 days since the brief was given out there are no excuses!
The unit has been given the brief for the Yokohama International Port Terminal competition; won by Foreign Office Architects, and instead of placing the terminal in Yokohama Bay they are to place these demands in the Thames.
Photogenic bunch, aren’t they?!

London’s public space on the river Thames, residential – industrial mix

The site: Unit 9 continues their theme of borders and boundaries by investigating the linear space between land and water that runs through London. In contrast to the abstract political, national and cultural boundaries from last year this edge is physical, tangible, with its specific materiality.

The river Thames is one of London’s greatest assets and at the same time the most underused. The river provides the largest, open, and continues ‘green spaces’ in London, historical it was the main contributor to London importance as political and commercial centre. From here the unknown worlds were discovered and conquered.

Diploma Unit 9 Begins!

Diploma Unit 9 kicked off on Monday the 3rd! We have been re-branded as Unit 9 this year from Unit 6. Well maybe we have just grown up a bit. The unit is 19 strong and it looks to be an exciting year. Unit 9 is run by Robert Thum and I and we hope to continue our relationship with Paul Coates who runs the MSc in computing.
