Future City @ Barbican

The World Centre for Human Concerns project that I work on in colaboration with Ocean North is being shown in the Future City Exhibition At the Barbican. There are some new Rapid Prototype models of the project that look great!
But the stuff to see are the projects from the 60's and 70's......

Pritzker Prize 2006!!!

Paulo Mendes da Rocha has won the 2006 Pritzker Prize for Architecture. I was put onto his work when I was in my final year at the Architectural Association by my tutor and friend Michael Hensel. I am a big Mendes da Rocha fan! Honestly his projects are super cool!

Morphogenetic Design.......

Last week I attended two very good symposiums that took place at the AA. The first day was also a book launch, AA and AD Wiley Symposium, Techniques and Technologies in Morphogenetic Design. The second day was Differentiated Structures in Nature and Design Symposium.
I think these were probably the most important symposia to go on at the AA in many years.
What made it even more poignant was the newly opened exhibition across the hall from the symposium on Zaha Hadid's new Phaeno Centre in Germany. After taking part in the event and passing through the exhibition on the way out the, work in the exhibition looked very dated and old in comparison to the ideas and work shown at the symposia.
In reflecting on the event I believe we are moving away from the old models of working, practicing, and educating towards what I would call an Architectural Intelligence.
Check out the new publication from AD!

Weekend In Cologne!

Spent the weekend in Cologne w/ Michael Hensel checking out what is new in Germany. Here are some images of the new Peter Zumthor Building (under construction) and a shot of a Renzo Piano department store, Colognes version of Selfridges.

dECOi @ AA....

Went to a good lecture this week at the AA by Mark Goulthorpe of dECOi Architects. I think he is doing some seriously cutting edge work in the area of computation to manufacture. Sexy designs and techniques!

These are some shots of a very cool model of a very cool project sent to me by Antonio for a project somewhere in Chile for some lucky Germans that need educating. It was designed by Antonio and his mates, I don't know the name of your practice..... send the name and i will update the entry.
Note to my students... this is what a good model looks like! So take notes!!!!

OCHOALCUBO!

I was sent this link by my buddy Antonio who is settling in back in his home town of Santiago, Chile.
Ochoalcubo is a new architecture development that is being built as we speak in Marbella, Chile. It involves some of Chile's most exciting architects like Mathias Klotz and Cecilia Puga and it also has international architectural stars like Toyo Ito involved as well. Take a look!

DSRG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hey everyone, these are friends of mine that are doing some of the most ground breaking design research in architecture today, seriously cool work! Check out there forum and get in on the conversations. Maybe some of them will be able to visit Diploma Unit 9 reviews this year.
Also I like that there are no vowels in there initials. Unlike FOA and OMA that when pronounced sound like names from the Ozarks, DSRG could be classified as a sound made in a Sci-Fi film. Go on try to pronounce it!
See, totally Sci-Fi.....Cool!!!
