Tutorials Monday 24th!

9tutorial1.jpg
9tutorial2.jpg
Gave tutorials today with my diploma students.... these 2 models were highlights in a day that was pretty much unexciting, and one of the models only appeared after Robert and I played with it! Look people you can not go through this year at this pace of production. You will have a very hard time in passing if you keep on going at things in such a slow, imprecise, and overall lazy way of working! I hope things get a bit more professional soon!!!!!!! Also out of 19 of you only 1 person took my advice and started to get his portfolio formatting underway. Look, go to MUJI and get the portfolios going, this is advice you should take!!!!!!

These are some shots of a very cool model of a very cool project sent to me by Antonio for a project somewhere in Chile for some lucky Germans that need educating. It was designed by Antonio and his mates, I don't know the name of your practice..... send the name and i will update the entry.
Note to my students... this is what a good model looks like! So take notes!!!!

OCHOALCUBO!

01.jpg
I was sent this link by my buddy Antonio who is settling in back in his home town of Santiago, Chile.
Ochoalcubo is a new architecture development that is being built as we speak in Marbella, Chile. It involves some of Chile's most exciting architects like Mathias Klotz and Cecilia Puga and it also has international architectural stars like Toyo Ito involved as well. Take a look!

Everything should be in STEREO!

stereo.jpg
Ok, so in the mid 90's Stereo Skateboards was the coolest team going! Cool graphics, Cool riders, Cool videos, just about cool everything! They shut down shop for a while to pursue other creative avenues and now they are back and have an even richer vibe of coolness! Go and check out there site now! OR PERISH!

unit d 18-10.jpg
Yesterday the 18th Unit D had there final review on the 2 week project to design a glass house anywhere in London.
I would like to thank the guest Jurors Sybil Trigg, Andrew Taylor, and Mark Hayduk for taking part and for there criticisms.
As a whole the work seen was very exciting and all were impressed with the amounts produced in 2 weeks.

case study.jpg

The new project brief was also given out yesterday. Everyone was given one of the Case Study House projects to study and redraw.
These drawings will act as there underlay to develop diagrammatic drawing techniques and to investigate the dynamics of the spaces.

DSRG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hey everyone, these are friends of mine that are doing some of the most ground breaking design research in architecture today, seriously cool work! Check out there forum and get in on the conversations. Maybe some of them will be able to visit Diploma Unit 9 reviews this year.
Also I like that there are no vowels in there initials. Unlike FOA and OMA that when pronounced sound like names from the Ozarks, DSRG could be classified as a sound made in a Sci-Fi film. Go on try to pronounce it!
See, totally Sci-Fi.....Cool!!!

Diploma Unit 9 Pin-Up!

9c.jpg
Today we had a pin –up with Diploma Unit 9. Some interesting ideas and viewpoints on the site and what might be proposed. But there was almost a complete avoidance of engaging with the very specific brief given out. Come on people stop avoiding the brief!!!!! Considering it has been 10 days since the brief was given out there are no excuses!
The unit has been given the brief for the Yokohama International Port Terminal competition; won by Foreign Office Architects, and instead of placing the terminal in Yokohama Bay they are to place these demands in the Thames.
Photogenic bunch, aren’t they?!

You will notice that the cushions are filled with chopped up trainers. Now that is a nice way to recycle!

Degree Unit D Begins!

pj glass house2.jpg
Degree Unit D started officially on Tuesday the 4th. A few changes this year from the past 2 years, unit staff member Antonio Lipthay has left us and moved back to Santiago, Chile with his wife Justine, (all the best guys!). The second change is we are joined by new unit staff member Thomas Modeen of Small Architecture (welcome aboard Tom)! The unit is very large this year with 20 students who come from a variety of countries around the globe.

Lightness-Houses: Case Studies for livable spaces of evanescence in public and private London!

“In this architecture of “lightness,” buildings become intangible, structures shed their weight, and facades become unstable, dissolving into an often luminous evanescence.”
Terence Riley

“Taken literally, the term private house might apply to any dwelling that shelters an individual or family, whether it is a palace or a tent. However, in Western culture the private house has been subject to tremendous interest and controversy in that it has been considered as a type of housing intended for a specific class of people: the bourgeoisie in Europe and the middle class in the United States. As such, the concept of the private house has become associated with a range of political, moral, social, and economic issues. “
Terence Riley

This year Unit D will be engaging with living in the city and how the ‘private house’ settles into these conditions. With a demand for new housing in the UK at higher densities how does the architectural icon of the ‘private house’ relate to the new urban demands?

With new patterns of living, boundaries between public and private realms that seem to shift constantly and the hybridization of work and leisure in peoples lives today how does the private house currently project these sensibilities and issues and can the ‘private house’ change or modify the urban landscape?

Transparency, luminosity, and veils, with these and additional themes that the unit develops we aim to redefine the relationship between the observer and the structure.

Unit 9 site visit 1

unit-9 2005-06 small.jpg

Unit 9 out on a site visit of the River Thames.

Aqua - Terra Thames Gateway Cruise terminal + X

London’s public space on the river Thames, residential – industrial mix

The site: Unit 9 continues their theme of borders and boundaries by investigating the linear space between land and water that runs through London. In contrast to the abstract political, national and cultural boundaries from last year this edge is physical, tangible, with its specific materiality.

The river Thames is one of London’s greatest assets and at the same time the most underused. The river provides the largest, open, and continues ‘green spaces’ in London, historical it was the main contributor to London importance as political and commercial centre. From here the unknown worlds were discovered and conquered.

Protection for wharfs: To this day active wharfs are located along the embankments of the Thames. They are vital for London’s survival by bringing material for the never ending building construction into the city centre or ship tons of waste daily to landfill sites outside London.

The mayor of London has recognised their importance: They are protected from change of use.

In recent years the river has been rediscovered a public space and transport artery. However there are only very few public spaces on the river it self. With the new development in the currently industrial river banks of the east there is a great opportunity to redefine London’s relation with the river.

This year the unit will look in the first part of the year at specific industrial sites on the eastern section of the river.
The second part of the year we will broaden the view to understand the strategic importance of the river, the Thames Gateway Corridor for the future of London.

Diploma Unit 9 Begins!

Diploma Unit 9 kicked off on Monday the 3rd! We have been re-branded as Unit 9 this year from Unit 6. Well maybe we have just grown up a bit. The unit is 19 strong and it looks to be an exciting year. Unit 9 is run by Robert Thum and I and we hope to continue our relationship with Paul Coates who runs the MSc in computing.
